  Jones Act and Puerto Rico
Posted by: SilverFang01 - 09-27-2017, 05:37 PM - Forum: Politics and Other Fun - Replies (6)

As you know Puerto Rico was struck by Hurricane María destroying infrastructure and creating a humanitarian crisis. Now, unlike with Harvey or Katrina, the US government is refusing to waive the Jones act for Puerto Rico-This means that any country that wants to help by sending much needed supplies cannot do so directly. They will have to bring it to the mainland, offload the ship, transfer the cargo to an american merchant marine vessel, and then that vessel can take the aid to Puerto Rico.

In these kind of emergencies, that type of delay will result in things getting worse.

So, I am asking that if you are willing, call your Senators and Representatives in Congress to waive the Jones Act during recovery efforts.

Puerto Rico needs as much help as possible.

  On crossovers
Posted by: classicdrogn - 09-26-2017, 09:04 PM - Forum: Other People's Fanfiction - Replies (3)

(copied over from SB's Kamen Rider fic ideas thread, after yet another "wouldn't it be cool if X appeared in Y?" post)

The most important question when you're talking about adding any crossover character in any setting is, "what can they do that the original cast did not or could not?" Just adding someone for the sake of them side by side being awesome tends to peter out shortly after the actual meeting, or else turn into a rehash of canon with more quips and the moments of awesome spread between more characters. Figure out what you want to have someone extra do in whichever setting you want to work with then figure out what crossover character would best fit that role, is my suggestion. Backwards from the usual method maybe, but it gets the hard question out of the way first so figuring out which favorite other character you can have shake hands (or cross swords, whatever) with canon characters doesn't have to be a guilty pleasure.

I'd be surprised if Doug didn't already have this in his repertoire, between how obvious and how obviously useful it it would be, though I suppose there might be legal problems with using statements made under the effect as it could be considered a form of duress. Still useful when you've got the black-hats dead to rights already and just have to make them explain how to defuse the death trap with the hostages, or for Doug to use on himself to back up a "no shit, there I was" story.

Of course, anyone who knows Doug will know that if he's fudging the details on one of those stories it's probably to make it less crazy... Big Grin

  American Gladiators
Posted by: DHBirr - 09-25-2017, 03:57 PM - Forum: Politics and Other Fun - No Replies

One reader of this Washington Post article (concerning the Orange One's war with football players) brought up a point that, as he says, most people seem to be overlooking:

Quote:jmgobler wrote at 3:45 PM EDT
What's getting lost in this discussion is Trump's complaint that football is not as violent as it used to be, but should be again! It's as though all the black football players are merely gladiators performing dangerous moves for the crowd's edification.

Gotta get this off my chest.

Who's ready for some more "Engage!"-ing space opera in the Prime Universe after more than a decade? Not this guy!

I mean, I'm looking forward to the premier, but - let's see if I've got what happens after that straight.

After paying for cable... and paying for Internet service... I am now going to have to pay for CBS All Access if I want to keep watching Discovery?

CBS is literally giving material-starving fans who have been surviving off of STO and various novels One Single Episode of an actual Star Trek series after over ten years of waiting for free... and then charging them if they want any more after their 'taste'...

CBS has become a drug dealer. Holy shit.

What the fuck, humankind?

It's late September and we really should be getting cool...

... but there's a heat warning in effect in Canada's capital city for this weekend. That means the forecast high temperature with the humidex factored in is expected to climb above blood temperature for at least two days in a row.

If it happens, this will be the hottest September 23 and 24 on record in Ottawa. Records started being kept in 1939.

And the beaches are closed. (The lifeguards have gone back to school.)

Well, I had known it existed, but this is funny anyway.

In: Asagiri Mz-23 Electronic Attack Systems will operate at police radar frequencies

As the thread title said.

It's long been known that they're able to detect most police radar and laser systems if you jump pins ***REDACTED*** and activate the system without the PEPPER card. But I've been able to prove that they don't just detect police radars- when that little magic light comes on on the dash it's not just warning you to slow down, it's letting you know that it's keeping your wallet safe.

I know because I passed a KCPD patroller at a speed well north of the official limit on the ring road and the only reason he stopped me was because he clocked me at a steady ten under the limit while I was obviously going faster than traffic he'd just tagged doing ten over. I pulled the link cable and he ran the gun over it again and it gave out a clean result so I didn't get the big ticket.

He put it down to an equipment malfunction and let me get on my way.

It's enough to satisfy him. It's not enough to satisfy and old Crow like myself.

Now, sure enough I get home and I have my hangar I hook it up and I shoot it all sorts of police frequencies and nothing happens. It detects the radar but it's not answering. Even when I trick it into thinking it's moving at speed by fooiling the Nav and Speedometer, it just and just flashes the magic light. It doesn't radiate anything back

I don't get my answer until I'm down in mundania and pass one of thse 'Votre Vitesse' signs.

It reads ten under the limit. Far slower than I was going.

Pass a second one.

Ten under again.

Pass a third one going five under. I get the magic light, but it shows my true speed.

Speed past the same one at five over, and I'm suddenly doing ten under again.

Now.  I don't think this is a bug. But how's it making the call?

And then I realise, the bike's also got a sign-spotter. Back in the hanger, I figure a way to fake a speed sign detection and sure enough, if it spots a sign, recognises it's going faster than the speed limit, and detects a radar or laser signal, it responds not just with a warning, but by actively jamming it.  And not just in the old barrage jamming that most primitive automotive systems like to use and which usually get spotted - it's using DRFM techniques to generate a false return and cause the radar to report a spuriously low speed.

Now, I got to say, whoever put that in there is either really dedicated to their speeding to use military-grade techniques and hardware a s a police jammer, or they're just showing off a little taster of what it can do to military sensors if you buy the full PEPPER package. I don't have the security certs to do it and see what the unlock achieves.

But, if you've got one, give it a try.
