  Net Neutrality
Posted by: robkelk - 04-25-2017, 03:19 PM - Forum: Politics and Other Fun - Replies (3)

(May as well start this in Politics...)

So, why does the Trump administration dislike net neutrality? It costs more in the long run, it makes it all-but-impossible for start-ups to innovate, it adds to the "walled garden" or "siloing" of the medium... it has no benefits to anyone who doesn't own a multinational corporation.

We have net neutrality in Canada, and the sky hasn't fallen...

In the somewhat distant future,Next Thursday A.D.There was a girl named Jolene,Rather different from you and me.She worked at Jizzmonic Institute,Just a beautiful face in a black cat suit,She looked really hot cleaning up the placeBut her bosses didn’t like her so they shot her into space. “We’ll send her lousy lovers,The worst we can find. She’ll have to satisfy them all,And well monitor her… (what are we monitoring again? Oh, yeah) her mind.” Now keep in mind Jolene can’t controlWhen the screwing begins and ends. She’ll have to satisfy herselfWith the help of her android friends. Android roll-call:

Google ordered to hand over data stored on foreign servers
Posted by: robkelk - 04-21-2017, 02:06 PM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (8)

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/04/2 ... mail_data/]According to this story on The Register

Quote:Google has been ordered by a US court to cough up people's private Gmail messages stored overseas – because if that information can be viewed stateside, it is subject to American search warrants, apparently.

Yes, I have a gmail account, but I don't use it for anything serious. My ISP stores my incoming and outgoing email in the same city that I live in.

  Transform into a ninth grader

"Grade 9" — The Barenaked Ladies

I found my locker and I found my classes
Lost my lunch and I broke my glasses,
That guy is huge! That girl is wailin'!
First day of school and I'm already failing.

This is me in grade nine, baby, this is me in grade nine
This is me in grade nine, baby, this is me in grade nine

I've got a blue-and-red Adidas bag and a humongous binder,
I'm trying my best not to look like a minor niner.
I went out for the football team to prove that I'm a man;
I guess I shouldn't tell them that I like Duran Duran.

This is me in grade nine, baby, this is me in grade nine
This is me in grade nine, baby, this is me in grade nine

Well, half my friends are crazy and the others are depressed
and none of them can help me study for my math test.
I got into the classroom and my knowledge was gone;
I guess I should've studied instead of watching Wrath Of Khan.

This is me in grade nine, baby, this is me in grade nine
This is me in grade nine, baby, this is me in grade nine

They called me chicken legs, they called me four-eyes
they called me fatso, they called me buckwheat,
they called me Eddie

This is me in grade nine, baby, this is me in grade nine
This is me in grade nine, baby, this is me in grade nine

I've got a red leather tie and pair of rugger pants,
I put them on and I went to the high school dance.
Dad said I had to be home by eleven -
aw, man, I'm gonna miss Stairway to Heaven.

This is me in grade nine, baby, this is me in grade nine
This is me in grade nine, baby, this is me in grade nine
Doug transforms into a simulacrum of himself as he was on his first day of ninth grade, complete with period-appropriate clothing. If he's listening to the song on his helmet, it transforms into a Walkman for the duration of the song.
Possibly useful for infiltration?

  Advance planning for Toronto trip
Posted by: NifT - 04-19-2017, 07:34 PM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (13)

So, since I'm going to be up in Syracuse, NY for a bowling tournament just prior to Memorial Day in 2018, I'm thinking of doing a trip over to Toronto for a bit, since it's just a few hours away.  Does anybody have any suggestions on things to do? I'm planning on something between 2-7 full days in the city before returning home.

Is a TV like this available?
Posted by: robkelk - 04-19-2017, 03:35 PM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (12)

My father's looking to replace his old television, because the cable company wants to charge him for a converter box once analog signals go away (despite (a)cable having nothing to do with over-the-air and (b)his contract with them saying they won't do that, but that's another thread).

He knows he's not getting another CRT - it'll be a flatscreen. The last two he tried were unsuitable - the first had poor electronics to the point where it couldn't hold a colour balance over a day, and the second kept prompting him to connect it to the internet (which he sees as a security hole, considering he doesn't yet have internet input to the TV).

So... something that won't malfunction before the warranty period ends (and preferably won't malfunction for decades, the way most old-style electronics last), and something that doesn't need (or nag) to be connected to the internet to work.

Brands: "Panasonic still makes TVs, right?" He won't have an LG. I haven't bought a TV in over a decade, so I don't know what's good and what isn't nowadays.

Size: What he has now is a 25" 4:3-ratio tube, so anything larger than a 30" flatscreen would probably be too big.

Location: Central Canada, relatively near Eastern Seaboard USA

What's worth looking at?

A little something Doug may have unsuccessfully tried as a gate song. Based on the lyrics, he'd have figured it likely involved travel or divination, but would've been stumped as to the actual effect without extensive testing.
I figure it winds up as a type of Weal or Woe augury effect. Doug has to start the song while thinking hard about a goal and a plan for reaching that goal. If the plan is not likely to result in successfully reaching the goal, the augury tells him to stay. If the plan is likely to result in successfully reaching the goal, the augury tells him to go.
Of course this doesn't tell Doug if it is a good plan or if there are better ways to achieve his goal.
