  Scientific basis for combat-hyping
Posted by: robkelk - 12-10-2016, 06:06 PM - Forum: General DW Chatter - Replies (4)

CBC: Scientists explore why time flies when you're having fun

Apparently, there's a "group of neurons" in the brains of mice that control how time is perceived subjectively. Add some superscience and boost that effect Up To Eleven - do you get combat-hype?

The Register: Going underground: The Royal Mail's great London train squeeze

tl;dr: The Royal Mail operated an narrow-gauge electric train system to move mail under London from 1927 until 2003. The system still exists.

How does this apply to the Drunkard's Walk? Well, imagine a Borrible or two mailing themselves across town... without paying postage, of course.

A new face on the $10 bill
Posted by: robkelk - 12-08-2016, 07:45 PM - Forum: General Chatter - No Replies

The Canadian $10 bill, that is. We're changing the images on our money reasonably soon, and the $10 is going to Viola Desmond.

"Who?" She set an example that, nine years later, Rosa Parks would follow.

How many tropes are in this xkcd?

Let's play "count the tropes"!

Here's the strip:

I'll start the list with the easy ones: http://allthetropes.org/wiki/Flat_What]Flat What and http://allthetropes.org/wiki/Comically ... _the_Point]Comically Missing the Point

SJGames is closing its GenChat forum
Posted by: robkelk - 12-04-2016, 07:50 PM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (1)

The announcement:

Quote:On Friday, December 9, the General Chatter forum will be locked to new posts. On the following Thursday, December 15, it will be removed.

With the rise of social media groups like Facebook, Google +, Twitter, and other blogs, we feel this forum doesn't serve the same purpose it once did. It is so easy for people to host their own discussions that we no longer see a need to have our own off-topic zone.

Geek Culture will still be your hub for all things geekish and will continue to follow all the normal rules that apply across all of our forums.

Until December 9, feel free to share your personal social media groups or blogs if you want to continue particular discussions or host a space for new ones. You are also welcome to add links to these sites to your forum signatures. On December 9, General Chatter will be locked to new posts but still accessible if you want to copy, screenshot, or otherwise save them. On December 15, Chatter will be removed from the forums.

Thanks for your contributions, and for being a part of the SJ Games Community. We look forward to your continuing participation in all the other forums.

My reply (to a reply to the announcement):
Quote:It is a pity, yes. There are quite a few intelligent participants in this forum, and I seriously doubt everyone will migrate to the same replacement.

That said, I'll make the fracturing of the userbase worse. If anybody here is interested in discussing music, troping, videogaming, or creative writing / fanfic, there's a thriving community waiting for you at Bob Schroeck's forum: http://drunkardswalkforums.yuku.com/

So if we get a sudden influx of posters, it may be my fault.

If you're part of that sudden influx of posters, welcome!

Will you be in Canada in 2017? Want a free admission pass?
Posted by: robkelk - 12-02-2016, 11:21 PM - Forum: General Chatter - No Replies

2017 is Canada's sesquicentennial year, and we're celebrating by offering free admission to all national parks, national historic sites, and national marine conservation areas - at least, the ones operated by Parks Canada. However, you need to get a pass beforehand.

At the moment, the webpage where one can request a 2017 Discovery Pass is swamped. But there's no rush; this isn't a limited offer.

I know I'll be asking for one - I'm planning to visit at least three national historic sites in 2017, and maybe more.

Details (what is and isn't included) and link to the order page: http://www.pc.gc.ca/eng/voyage-travel/admission.aspx

I have no idea what happened to the forums today.
Posted by: Bob Schroeck - 12-02-2016, 12:30 AM - Forum: Forums - Replies (4)

Just that it happened to all of Yuku, including their support boards.  I would guess it was the second half of their server update except I wouldn't've expected them to do that in the middle of the day.
Glad to see it's over with, whatever it was.

  Unknown Anime - Maps
Posted by: Jinx999 - 11-30-2016, 11:52 PM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (9)

I've got an old tape of an anime called Maps.
It's got spacecraft designed like art deco hood ornaments.
It's produced by KSS films in 1993.
Producers Takao Asaka and Rikio Yoshida.
And I can find NOTHING about it. The only evidence I've got that it ever was made is a VHS tape of it. Subtitled in French.
