Tools of the trade...need some input
Posted by: ordnance11 - 01-31-2015, 11:22 PM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (5)

We just had a meeting with our civilian equivalent of a major general. Nice guy. He stated that one of the initiatives he's trying out is that to send Go Pro cameras and tablets to the offices for testing. Naturally, our office is not getting the the goodies. Nothing is stopping me from getting a Go Pro however and using it. The tablet will have to wait because I'd need a secure tablet wit the appropriate software to work with. A just plain out of the box tablet is not recommended.
I see 2 advantages in using a Go Pro on a helmet mount.:
1. I can take photos while doing measurements. A great convenience. there had been times when I feel I need an extra hand or two.
2. I can take photos of opportunity as it presents itself.
Which comes down to the requirements:
1. I need a telephoto capability for the Go Pro. There had been times I can't get close enough due to safety concerns and I need to read the data plate.
2. The lens assembly and camera had to small enough to fit in the waterproof case. Because I'll be encountering extreme physical conditions.
3. Low light - night capability be a plus. So of the places I've been a low light no light. Placing a go pro on a telescope mount and dropping it a confined space to see what's there is good.
4. Need for a live remote viewer.
The Go Pros out of the box don't have telephoto capability. Stock telephoto lenses are available, but are too big to fit in the casing. However I did find a company in Sparta Michigan called Ragecams that do custom mods. They can place a telephoto lens and still be inside the casing.

Ain't gonna be cheap, but it might be worth it. I can convince myself to go this route if it's for work.
Any further suggestions?

Gues what the virtual assistant is going to be called?
Based on CNET's preview, this might be what Windows 8 should be.

I would like to wish Mizunashi Akari-san, born 30 January 2286, a very happy birthday.  Due to her personality, she'll have happiness even without my good wishes, but still....

So, apparently this shop really exists. They even have proper outfitting - including a wind-tunnel for caps, and tinker-tech for those so disposed. Almost worth the price of a return transpondian flight.

  Specialized on-line encyclopedias?
Posted by: robkelk - 01-30-2015, 02:39 AM - Forum: General Chatter - No Replies

We all know about the general encyclopedias and wikis, but how many good-quality specialized reference works are out there?

I'm asking because I learned about a very specialized one today: http://www.parli.ca/]Parli, the online encyclopedia of Canadian political terms.

Full statement by Mr. Petty at the end of the article.

  Bubblegum Crisis Fansite....

Found and recovered from the depths of the internet.

Yours Truly, 2032

Done the old fashioned way. Off a home computer with an internet connection. And sure so it looks like it. But, for the time being, it seems to work. I have no idea how long it'll remain that way, and I'll have to get to work on cleaning up and updating it..... but for the time being, there's at least one more Bubblegum Crisis fansite in the world.

EDIT: And I'll be amazed if it hasn't fallen over again in the morning

Okay, this is just silly, but I have to share it...

... with people who would appreciate it.
On my way to a Panera to get my lunch about two hours ago, I walked by a gourmet grocery that had a sign out on the sidewalk, the kind with the plastic letters you put into the message you want.  And either because of carelessness, or because of someone with a sense of humor similar to mine, it read "CALL US TO PLAN YOUR SUPERB OWL PARTY".
And gods help me, all I could think of was walking in and saying to someone behind a counter, "I have this barn owl that I think is really fantastic, and I'd like to throw a big shindig in its honor..."
(And then running like hell, of course, as fast as my 52-year-old knees would let me.)
