  Merry Christmas

I do hope everyone is having a safe and happy Christmas with the family (or alone if thats the preference) and will be eating much good food this day along with getting gifts full of shiny things you've been wanting this year. We've known each other for a number of years now and I do hope we'll continue to keep in contact and with luck find games to run together in the coming years.

Need a list of "defining" SF
Posted by: robkelk - 12-25-2012, 04:19 AM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (21)

As the subject line says, I need a list of "defining" SF... and thought the folks here would be able to help build it.

What are the stories that defined what science fiction was "supposed to be like," for the times that the stories were published? The medium doesn't matter - print, film, radio-play, anime, those Colliers' Magazine stories about possible space stations, whatever - but the stories have to be about The Future. (Or, at least, what was the future for the time the stories were published. "The Year 199x" counts if the story was written in the 1980s...)

What goes on this list?

  Forsyth's "The Shepherd"
Posted by: robkelk - 12-25-2012, 03:17 AM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (3)

CBC Radio has aired Allan Maitland's reading of Frederick Forsyth's The Shepherd every year on Christmas Eve for the last 34 years. I just listened to it... again.

There's a podcast of the reading here. If you don't know the story, set aside a half-hour and give it a listen. If you do, enjoy the reading.

Merry Christmas.

  A random thought...

In a thread on the SJGames forum, I was referred to this old FedEx ad, and one reference in it got me thinking a bit...

Who else can totally imagine Sailor Mercury with a Night Vision Tiara (as opposed to her usual HUD Tiara)?

Forrestal-Class Aircraft Carriers, the First Supercarriers

While it has been discussed in the past against bringing a big danelaw military presence into space, what about various factions and associations gaining large, multi-function vessels? The Forrestal class ships seem like they could be excellent for conversions into various ships.
A good deal of gutting could produce a good bulk cargo ship. A more limited amount of gutting and conversion and you could have several different uses - a ready-made Fen settlement for a small to mid-sized population, whether afloar in space or landed on a surface; a colony ship for out of Sol System missions; perhaps a sometimes mobile pit stop in space like the Gnarlycurl.
Opinions? Especially on the feasibility of convincing USgov to sell them?
