Somebody fed me a straight line...

Somebody on /r/WritingPrompt fed me a straight line...  For those that don't know, this is a part of reddit where a poster presents a prompt and responders write a short story answering the prompt. The prompt in question was "
[WP] You are a superhero whose powers are based on the music you are listening to. Rock can make you stronger, classical makes you smarter, etc. One day, you're fighting your toughest villain yet, and you are forced to use your "forbidden" playlist." (link:

I could not resist leaving a pointer to the Drunkard's Walk page ?

[OOC] Didn't think I'd need to do this, but...
Posted by: robkelk - 05-17-2022, 05:53 PM - Forum: The Attic - No Replies

Since I was the one who suggested in the first place that they be added to the Metacontinuity, and since I was the only one who had posted to the wiki anything about them, and since I was the one who came up with how to integrate them into the storyline and had my basic story outline approved without dissent at the weekly writers' chat on May 11, I thought I didn't need to actually come out and say this.

But it looks like I do.

As per the rules of this writing collective, I call "dibs" on the Social Welfare Agency from Gunslinger Girl.

Hands off until I've completed their already-approved plotline, please.

How the US' ICE became a domestic surveillance agency
Posted by: robkelk - 05-15-2022, 06:44 AM - Forum: Politics and Other Fun - Replies (2)

Full report at americandragnet.org. Summary story on The Register.

From the Executive Summary of the report:

  • ICE has scanned the driver’s license photos of 1 in 3 adults.
  • ICE has access to the driver’s license data of 3 in 4 adults.
  • ICE tracks the movements of drivers in cities home to 3 in 4 adults.
  • ICE could locate 3 in 4 adults through their utility records.

And almost all of that was done without a warrant.

(I was not aware that Thomson Reuters was in the data-broker business... but they're one of the USA's Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency's data sources.)

Obvious portal song is obvious (Wheel in the Sky by Journey)

So obvious that it's probably been used and I just forgot, TBH. If not, where might it be from and/or to? Dukes of Hazard would be a humorously literal interpretation of wheels in the sky, but really doesn't match in any other way.

  Utility: protection from elements
Posted by: Labster - 05-13-2022, 03:37 PM - Forum: The Game Everyone Loves To Play - No Replies

My Winter Coat is pretty relaxed.  It's a song about a winter coat, and it seems like a joke song, except it just keeps going on and on, and eventually you admit that the musician must really love her coat.

As a power song, it's eight and a half minutes, which is long enough to do something useful.  Protection from cold is obvious, but I was thinking it might be protection from the elements more generally.  "It's like walking around in your bed all day," after all.  Plus I can just see Doug ready to head across the Sahara, and summoning up a parka.  "Now I'm ready!"  I assume that he could give the conjured coat to others too... it is a coat.

EDIT: The posts that preceded this post have been moved because they reference a plot that we have been asked to not use.

Old thread is old... and filled with plotbunnies

"Whatever happened to us yesterday wasn't time travel. We're definitely not in our home world."

"How do you figure that, Rally?" asked Bean around big bites of burgers, not really caring but willing to humor his sometimes-partner.

"When I went to renew my license this morning, they told me that bounty hunting's illegal here. Even if you get a license out-of-state."

"That's a shame," May commented. "It's been three decades. When did they change the law?"

"That's how I know we're in a different world. They changed it in 1963."

May's eyebrows headed for her forehead. "But that's before I was born!"

"Huh," Bean grunted. "So we're not home. Any idea how to find out where we are?"

"Not a clue. Right now, I'm more worried about how to earn a living. Burgers aren't free."

Usagi Tsukino is canonically 4'11".

Queen Victoria was 4'11".

Coincidence?  I think not!

  "Roe v Wade"
Posted by: robkelk - 05-04-2022, 08:14 AM - Forum: Politics and Other Fun - Replies (23)

Surprised we didn't have a thread for this already, considering it's the first time I can remember that there was a leak from the US Supreme Court.

Anyway.

American women can obtain abortions in Canada if Roe v. Wade falls, minister says
