  teaching aid: She Tried It Last Night by John Ryan
Posted by: classicdrogn - 12-08-2021, 02:51 AM - Forum: The Game Everyone Loves To Play - No Replies

Internet Archive link

One of those innuendo laden novelty songs from the 1920s or thereabouts (though the record itself was apparently from 1940) this one gives students a variable bonus to learn and enjoy something Doug or the target pf I'll Play For You is teaching them them depending on how many of the following apply:

* Student is female
* After dark
* It's the student's first lesson on the subject
* The subject is a physical activity
* The location is a frozen body of water or skating rink/park, etc.

With all five and a single student it's basically a zero-to-hero movie montage in real life for whatever the subject is, turning a someone who's only heard of it and thought it sounded interesting but scary or difficult into a contender for top place in a regional competition in minutes. Even with only three they could reasonably expect to reach the quarter-finals, maybe semi-finals with a strong talent and lucky bracket assignments, and even meeting a single point will give a complete novice a solid enough foundation to carry on studying it by themselves. The effect is divided by the square root of the number of students involved, roughly speaking.

Honestly, I'm just amused by the mental image of Doug taking his Hogwarts class out onto the Black Lake or (one of?) the Senshi to a skate park at night and having told them nothing about what he intends to teach, to learn some time-critical skill that would normally have nothing to do with the location because it gives them a better bonus. Or possibly using I'll Play For You on someone else to quickly bring him up to speed on something, the general WTF and "Only you, Doug..." factor works either way.

Am I misremembering, or wasn’t there a wiki or database of Doug’s used and/or Bob’s accepted power songs? And if so, does anybody have the link please?

  Another simulacrum song

"only my railgun", by fripSide - the first OP for A Certain Scientific Railgun. Video with translated lyrics here.

It's an "I Am" Song, so the power is obvious: create a simulacrum of Mikoto Misaka, the eponymous "Railgun".

(If we go with the fan-written Staggers as canon - which I believe we don't need to do - then Doug doesn't have the chance to meet Mikoto until after Eimi's along for the ride, though.)

  [OOC][PLOT][ARC 4] Planning for Arc 4
Posted by: robkelk - 12-01-2021, 09:29 PM - Forum: The Attic - Replies (3)

Mod note: We've pulled some posts out of the pre-retcon "Planning for Arc 3" and "Planning for Arc 4" threads and moved them to the post-retcon threads, before sending the remaining work -- Black Aeronaut's overall plots, which we've been asked to not use -- to his writing subforum.

Quoting from Nabiki Tendo's page on the Ranma Wiki:

Quote:Near the end of the manga, Nabiki once helped Akane to grow spores from magic mushrooms, which could control age through digestion, but it is left to fan imagination if she continued to cultivate them for herself afterwards. Turning herself youthful again every 10 years is definitely something she would find useful, as would auctioning them off to billionaires.

So there's one life-extension method to add to the list...

  [OOC][META][INFO][FUN] So what do they REALLY know?
Posted by: Black Aeronaut - 11-30-2021, 07:46 AM - Forum: Hangar 13 - No Replies

I know that some people might call my knowledge and experience into question.  And this is only natural - people are kinda wired to be skeptical because this skepticism acts as a check to make sure things happen as they should.

That said, I found a little something that should provide a small bit of insight into the sort of work I did as a Gunners Mate in the US Navy - the magazine sprinkler system.

https://www.globalsecurity.org/military/...60_ch1.pdf

No worries, this is an unclassified document for a system that we've been using since before World War I, and have kept using because it never, ever fails.  The only maintenance it needs is a quarterly operational check, and a ten-year interval maintenance requirement where all the rubber and monel bits get replaced.

That quarterly check is really kinda fun for us.  It's one of those things that will have a lot of people on the ship wondering what the hell we're doing, because it's all the Gunners Mates' show with just a bit of coordination from the Damage Controlmen (because our magazine sprinkler systems have remote operation valves in their DC lockers).  It involves fitting a device called a "test casting" into the main sprinkler valve, which will divert the water from the sprinkler pipes into a 2.5" fire hose which is connected to an overboard discharge port.  Very noisy, because OMG 150PSI (10.3 bars) SALT WATER VIA SHIP'S FIRE MAIN SYSTEM! BOOM-WHOOOOOSSSHHHHH!!!

(The "BOOM" is that same 150 PSI salt water in the sprinkler system's hydraulic control lines as it opens the main valve... And it ain't a little one!)

Not sure what to do after this for the story since I can come up with ideas to start and not sure after that or weird one-shot things.

  Re: Kyle Rittenhouse
Posted by: Black Aeronaut - 11-29-2021, 02:17 PM - Forum: Politics and Other Fun - Replies (3)

Okay, I got a question for you folks.

What EXACTLY did you *want* Kyle Rittenhouse to do in a situation where he is being assaulted by a bunch of rioters?

No, do not dodge the question by saying he should not have been there in the first place.  There were a *lot* of people who should not have been there in the first place.

Also do not dodge the question by saying he should not have been armed.  There were a *lot* of people there who were armed.

And definitely do not split hairs about what *type* of weapon he was armed with.  That matters little in the grand scheme of things.  (Translation: if it had been anything other than a gun that Kyle Rittenhouse had used, then your issue is ultimately not about the actions of Kyle Rittenhouse.)
