  Best Eats in Fenspace
Posted by: robkelk - 07-24-2010, 03:52 PM - Forum: Fenspace - Replies (25)

I've noticed a few eating establishments have reputations for serving the best example of a particular food in Fenspace. The best Monte Cristo Sandwich is found at "Ham & Monk's" in the Clark Savage, Jr. Memorial Stadium and Music Complex on Deimos; the best Garlic Steak Sandwich is served at "Manny O'Kelly's Bar" in Moonbase Alpha, Luna, and the best Tollhouse Cookies can be bought by the dozen at "Meg's" in Stellvia.

Anyone have any more of these? A good-sized list would make for a handy sidebar in the Fenspace Travel Guide...

  Defamation of Character Suit?
Posted by: ordnance11 - 07-24-2010, 04:00 AM - Forum: Politics and Other Fun - Replies (16)

If you folks are following the case of Sheryl Sherrod, you have to ask: How successfully can she press a defamation of character and libel suit against Breitbart and Fox News?
If Breitfield was smart, he'd have groveled and apologized abjectly, just like Ag Sec Vilseck and the rest of the administration. Ditto for Fox News. I'm pretty sure the NAACP would be more than happy to fund a legal team to start the ball rolling. Of course, given he seems to be the type that would be gladly be a martyr for his cause..whatever they are...taking away his money seems fair to me. He's not gonna be dead. Just wished he was.

Edit Wrong name" should had been Bretibart

Tech Request -- Accessing extensionless files from VBA
Posted by: SkyeFire - 07-23-2010, 07:19 PM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (12)

Never thought this would be my biggest headache today.

Short version:  I spent all day yesterday doing test runs and logging data (for which the physical setup took the first part of the week).  Today I'm trying to sort the massive pile of log files into something that's convenient for analysis.
Problem is, the software that was logging the realtime data is an old, unsupported POS with very strange filing procedures.  Essentially, for a test names "Test1", it dumps out a dozen+ files named Test1.xxx, where xxx can be, well, a LOT of different things.  And every additional test gets all its files dumped in that same directory.
And, just for grins&giggles, the data I need are always in the file that has no extension.

So, today I've been bashing (ahem) together a VBA script in Excel (sucks, but it's what I've got) that opens a user dialog, sucks up the file, and rearranges the data into nice columnar format for further processing.  But I'd like to have the file-select box filter out all the files that have extensions, so that when the user selects the directory where all the files from all of the tests got dumped, the user will only see the files that have no extension.
And this is where I'm stuck.  Googling around I've found how to have the box filter for any extension I like, except the no-extension-at-all condition.  I just can't seem to find the correct magic combination of search terms to lead me to what I need.

Anybody know how to do this?

  Alien Swarm
Posted by: HoagieOfDoom - 07-23-2010, 07:31 AM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (1)

Valve released a game called Alien Swarm a few days ago. It's a Source Engine game that's completely free. Top-down, isometric co-op shooter game. You play as a bunch of marines on some colony world fighting against, well, an Alien Swarm. It feels a lot like Left 4 Dead (there's a lot of sound effects and interface elements shared between the two games). System requirements aren't horrendous and it's a heck of a lot of fun. If anyone would like to play a game, my SteamID is the same as my handle here.

  Et tu, OpenDNS?
Posted by: Morganite - 07-23-2010, 06:02 AM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (1)

So, I have all my computers set up to use OpenDNS. But when I started up my browser this evening, it's blocking various sites with messages like "Site blocked. www.sankakucomplex.com is not allowed on this network."

Looked around and found google's public DNS, which seems to be working just fine. But the question remains... what the hell is this?

Is this a subversion, a lampshading, or both?
Posted by: robkelk - 07-23-2010, 03:22 AM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (2)

http://www.dorktower.com/2010/07/21/dor ... y-21-2010/]Today's Dork Tower has a couple of characters we haven't seen for a few years...

Is Gilly subverting or lampshading the trope? (Or both?) Must use the correct term over on TVTropes...
