  [story][spamfic] Chrysanthemum Day
Posted by: robkelk - 09-06-2009, 04:11 AM - Forum: Fenspace - No Replies

Narita International Airport
Tokyo, Japan
9 September 2009
17:55 JST (08:55 UTC)

"I'm terribly sorry, sir, but they don't have passports. I understood that there would be some special paperwork in this matter waiting for us when we arrived."

The customs agent sighed. "You decided to visit on Kiku no Sekku. Perhaps the paperwork will arrive tomorrow."

The ship's owner frowned. "That presents a problem. The Prime Minister asked us to visit today, presumably because today is Chrysanthemum Day."

Just then, a man wearing a black suit, with a briefcase handcuffed to his wrist, walked into the room. "Pardon the interruption. You are Scott-san?"

"I am."

The briefcase was opened and three Japanese passports withdrawn from it, leaving one in the case. "Please give these to your associates as quickly as possible."

"Certainly. I will do so as soon as my business with this diligent customs agent is concluded."

18:20 JST

While the owner and crew of the unusual craft were away from the airport, a young artist set up an easel and went to work.

"Thank you for joining us on such short notice, Mr. Scott."

"It is my pleasure, Prime Minister. I never expected to be invited to your residence, especially not on such an important day in the Japanese calendar."

"Ah, but you are quite respected in certain Japanese cultural groupings. Why would we not invite you to visit?"

Noah smiled. "I do like that phrase, 'certain Japanese cultural groupings'. I must remember to use it myself sometime. Have you met my associates yet?"

"Not yet, no. I would be happy to be introduced to them, although I do wonder why you didn't bring all of them along."

"Alas, somebody had to remain at home, lest I return to discover someone else had moved in while we were gone."

Yoriko turned to Jake, and pouted. Again. "I never get to go anywhere interesting..."

The translator standing beside the two gentlemen was enjoying himself; it was rare that he was asked to interpert a casual conversation like this one. His skills were sufficient for the task, though.

"Such delightful young ladies you've brought to visit us, Scott-san. But their names, mannerisms, and appearances... Are they, how do you say it...?"

"The term I believe you're looking for is 'biomodded', Fujishima-san. It's short for 'biologically modified'. This is something we don't ask people who we meet in space, just in case the modification was accidental or regretted after the fact. However, I do know that many people take new names when they first go into space, for any number of reasons."

"Then Hasegawa-san and Li-san had different names before they joined your staff, Scott-san?"

"That is another thing we don't ask about, Fujishima-san. A few of the people who changed their names did so to avoid the consequences of their actions. I doubt that applies to my staff, though. Perhaps it would be best to think of them as remarkably dedicated cosplayers."

The manga-ka smiled. "Yes. perhaps that would be best."

The artist packed up his easel. As he walked to the front gate, he started to hurry, as if he had a deadline to meet.

"Noah, have you seen today's Asahi Shimbun?"

"Why would I be reading a Japanese newspaper, Yayoi?"

"We're in it."

Noah raised an eyebrow. "I didn't think we made that big a fuss yesterday."

"I wouldn't know..." muttered Yoriko.

Yayoi ignored her. "We did arrive in something other than an aircraft. Oh, look!" She pointed to an artist's rendering of the Epsilon Blade. "It's lovely."

Noah glanced at the text around the ukiyo-e image. "Which of these is supposed to be the EB's name?"

Yayoi blushed as she pointed to the text alongside the image. "It says 'Maniakku Jogyosha'. That means..."

When she didn't continue, Noah smiled. "No need to continue, Yayoi. I know what it means."

"You don't mind?"

"Why should I mind my ship being called 'fanboy's rolling stock'? At least they didn't call me, or it, 'otaku'." After a moment, he added, "Did they?"

  Anyone Twitter? (Need Help w/Contact)
Posted by: Jeanne Hedge - 09-06-2009, 12:02 AM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (4)

I've been trying to get hold of Brian Edmonds for several weeks now (probably getting close to 2 months). Brian is the guy who runs RAAC,
of which I'm a moderator. I need to reach him because there's a major bug in the RAAC server - it will let us receive fic submissions, modify
submissions, archive submitted fics, but when we try to send final and approved fics to the usenet group they don't appear. (the only thing that is
appearing is the FAQ file every 2 weeks) I've been sending email to every address I have for Brian. He's not replied to anything, but nothing has
bounced either, so they must still be valid. Brian is the only one who has access to the server, so it's kind of important to make contact and find out
what's going on.

I've found Brian's Twitter channel(?) but have no clue about how to go about contacting him via that route. (no, I don't Twitter) Unfortunately,
he hasn't tweeted in about a month either, but that's much more recent than I've been able to get an email from him.

I found him at twitter.com/gweep If anyone can make contact and tell him to read his various RAAC email accounts, or
his gweep.ca email account, or to just email me, I'd be very grateful.

As folks who play CoH with us may or may not know, I've been working on some linguistic tools for one of Valles' settings, and I've gotten into my
head the idea of writing a fanfic... for a novel not yet written.

Anyhow, one of the characters in my planned fic is a musician who plays some sort of stringed intrument like a sitar, banjo, samisen, etc. , and I described
her musical genre as Hindi/zydeco/jazz

However, I thought I'd share this rock song played with sitars:

more as the work progresses.

  Too Much, Perhaps?

I have a buddy over here who's been a sounding board for me with ideas concerning DSKS. The dude is awesome - he has lived in Japan for quite a while
prior to joining the Navy and he has substantial knowledge of how things work around here.

One topic that took me by surprise was Yakuza.

A fact that he was able to confirm for me was that it is not uncommon for mid-level Yakuza to have ties to politicians - even relatively powerful ones such as
party leaders. Therefore, my idea of Rei's father having such connections does not break any walls at all.

The only question was how Zeke was going to get out of the situation where Daddy-san arranges for Zeke to have an accident. Of course, he can fight his way
through a few thugs, but my friend told me that Yakuza thinking in these matters goes by orders of magnitude - if one or two guys doesn't do it, then ten
should. And if that don't work, then we'll use a hundred.

Fortunately, there is a caveat; Yakuza leaders set strict limits on how much of their resources are supposed to be used for a given sort of target, and anyone
that exceeds those limits face harsh punishment - and not just the removal of a finger. I'd hardly see Zeke being worth too much of the Yakuza's time
and effort.

Except that Yakuza are also opportunists. My friend told me that one way to secure an alliance among the Yakuza was to be promised the leader's
daughter's hand in marriage. He then proceeds to dump this idea on me.

Say that Principal Kuno wasn't just a Principal. Say it was all just a front to throw off suspicion. Say that the money to pay for that -castle- he lives
in was because he is a Yakuza boss. Say that the Yakuza gang that Rei's father has ties to is Kuno's. And say that as a means of not only securing
the alliance of such a powerful fighter -AND- fulfilling their politician's wishes of getting Zeke away from Rei, Kuno instructs Kodachi that she is to
marry Zeke. (Sure, there's Ranma, but Kuno thinks he's already got enough contenders already.)

Kodachi was sullen at first until she sees, 1) Hey, he's not half-bad looking, 2) Oh, he is some kind of technological mage, 3) COMPETITION! YES, I CAN
HAVE FUN WITH THIS!

Of course, Kodachi would be the worse for wear in any confrontation with any one of Zeke's paramours, let alone all of them. She gets in on a political
card, though - Zeke REALLY doesn't want to be on the bad side of the Yakuza, least of all Kuno's Yakuza.
Although I'm wondering if Usagi should 'accidentally' use her healing power on Kodachi. She'd be a lot less crazed - gentle, even - except
that I think she'd still be quite devious at times. Diabolical at the very least.

So, over on the rpg.net Other Media boards(registration required), user Shadowjack has been watching the Sailor Moon anime from the beginning and giving a hilarious breakdown of each episode and his thoughts on the series as he goes. He just reached the end of the Jadeite arc which he capped off with this:
