Sorry, this came to me today AND WOULDN'T LEAVE ME ALONE.

"Our guest tonight, I'm not ashamed to say, is much, MUCH smarter than me. They've also not walked anywhere and been waited on hand and foot for nearly fourty years, something I wish I could do. The fact they're walking around for this makes me nervous, and I hope the new Hummer doesn't collapse in on itself and start bending light. Ladies and Gentlemen, Professor Stephen Hawking!"

Steel Canyon, Paragon City, RI

You don't understand. You can't understand.

You never will.

You don't know what it's like to be alone.

The rain plasters my hair to my skull, trickles down my skin. The sounds of the city echo past my ears.

A car goes by, splashing a wave over the pavement. It soaks me, down to the bone.

The driver doesn't stop. He doesn't care.

Nobody does.

Five minutes, now.

I close my eyes. My chest rises, falls.

A woman pushes past now, the metal tines of her umbrella jabbing against my face as she passes by.

She says nothing. No words, no apology.

To her, I might as well not exist.

I'm not important.

I don't matter.

I remember this. I remember being this way.

The isolation. The emptiness.

This is what I ran away from. This is what I fought so hard to escape.

But now...

It's like waking from a dream. The best dream in the world.

Only to be spat on by reality. Spat and kicked and dragged into the cold wet street.

I had everything. Everything and everyone. I was part of something. I was someone.

But it's gone. All gone.

And it's your fault.

Your fault.

You don't understand. You can't understand.

You think you do. But you're wrong.

The silence is all you've ever known.

So you've dragged me down with you.

You think that's right.

Oh yes. So very right.

So right that I have to thank you.

Almost time.

I pull my sleeve back, squinting at the watch strapped to my wrist.

Water sluices over the scratched plastic, obscuring the face. The glowing hands are visible. Just barely.

I stare at the lights across the street.

It's just a building. I know that. It's not even the place I really want.

But it's the closest I can get to you.

It'll do.

Now.

The flash lights the darkness. One, two, three and four, a rolling boom across the night.

The heat washes over my face.

I smile.

Fuck you, Midnighters.

I turn away, and walk.

The university burns behind me.

Mission: Accomplished

End Notes:

Probably the first time I've posted fic for something before actually rolling the character. This guy now exists in my head, though I'm not yet clear
on his name, appearance, or indeed abilities.

I will say - this was directly inspired by Wiregeek's excellent Lost Sabre story in the other thread, which got me thinking about the consequences of the
Midnight arc's Lost Cure.

Not everyone wants to be "saved".

*Snff*
*snfff*

The desolate Brickstown stoop played unwitting host tonight, to a bedraggled young lady, a Paragon City Sewer manhole leaning against her knees, a rusty broadsword in an ersatz sheath on her back. Rain spattered intermittently off the manhole cover, occasionally mixing with the tears on the careworn face of Jeena Malso, known as Lost Sabre, leaving trails in the dirt and grime of the street.
A blast of jets and the muted clank of a hardsuit dropping to the pavement brought Lost's eyes up, and the slender armored form of Silicon Sabre stood in front of her, holding out a hand. Lost took her hand, and the two disappeared in a crackling of golden light. Ouroboros flickered into being around the two, and disappeared again as they shunted through space and time. Talos island clarified about them, and Silicon drew the passive Lost to the Base Portal at the foot of the hill, and they disappeared again, into the Riot Force base. Silicon handed Lost into the shower and moved off towards the locker rooms herself. Lost moved as if in a trance, slowly but thoroughly cleaning herself, Lost let the hot water of the shower beat some of her misery out of her.
Afterwards, pulling on her customary 'upscale' outfit of sweater vest and green jeans, Jeena looked up from tying her shoes to see Sylia leaning against the doorframe, elegant and slim in slacks and an ivory blouse, perfectly made up and accesorized. Lost looked down again, hair swinging forward to hide her face, and mustered her strength to face her notional employer. She straightened and gazed into Sylia's eyes. Sylia nodded once and turned. Jeena followed her to the small entry room to the base, and Sylia sat, elegantly poised on a green chaise lounge. Jeena sat as well, perched uncomfortably on the edge of the grey couch facing it, and the two sat in silence for a long moment.
"So, care to tell me what led you to Brickstown tonight?" Sylia asked. Jeena sighed, and bent her head forward to rub her face with her hands.
"I just got access to the Midnight Club." She stated, and trailed off. Straightening, she faced Sylia head on. "I just got access to the Midnight Club. I thought they seemed like a really interesting group, someone I could do a lot of good working with. What I didn't expect was that there would be a cure for the Lost...   or that it would be so limited."
"Limited?"
"Before they were caught by those crazy preachers, most of those people had lives, Sylia! They may not have been rich or even may not have had homes, but they were their own people, and the Lost took that from them, welded them into their own twisted group. It was only because of Nene's sensors and you Sabres that I made it out of that...  " Jeena trailed off again, staring into space, and Sylia leaned across the gap to put a gentle hand on hers.
"But you did make it out."
"Yes. I did..  but I'm not whole, Sylia. I still don't have any memories between childhood and my rescue, and I still have the occasional..  breakdown..  from the drugs, from the malnutrition, from the toxins in the sewers..  I don't know."
"I know, and while we don't have anything we can do about the memories, we are, at least, on top of the neurological damage."
"Cold comfort... "
"I know..  but again, why Brickstown tonight?"
"Well..  the Cure.. That nice Rikti researcher said it should help reverse the changes that the Lost were going through, and it worked wonderfully..  but I ran into someone that I had known while I was..  in. The Cure changed back his body...  but he didn't know who I was. He didn't remember me, or respond to his name, he barely seemed to know where he was." Sylia drew breath to interrupt, and Jeena raised a hand to stop her. "I know, something as massive as the Lost Cure would certainly cause some disorientation..  but I followed him for over an hour, Sylia. He just..   wasn't there anymore." Jeena's hand fell back to her lap, and she clasped her hands together, staring at them. "He wasn't the person I knew..   then..   and didn't seem to be even..  a person..  now. I called the Paragon EMS and got out of there."
Sylia hmmed.
"They knew what I was talking about as soon as I said 'Lost Cure'. It's been happening for awhile now, it seems that about half of the people who get the Cure just don't..  recover. The other half seem to be able to go on to 'normal' lives, but..  even they don't have a 100% return of their memory."
"So..  when I had one dose of the Cure left..  I dosed myself. Everything turned into color mush, and I passed out."
"I woke up on a rooftop in Brickstown, and made my way to where you found me. And.... I've given up. We've tried psionics, magic, technology, and now this, and none of it has brought me any closer to finding my memories. I don't think I'm ever going to get them back."
"So." Sylia asked, focussed on Jeena's face. "What were you doing in Bricks, then? Had you given up altogether?"
Jeena sat back, determination sharpening the planes of her face. "No. No way. Even if I don't have my old memories, I still have the memories of Paragon, of what you and the Sabres have done for me, and the good people I've worked with here. If I have to rebuild my life, here is a good place to do it. Here, I can be one of the people that make Paragon City a great place to live, and that's worthwhile, no matter what I was..   back home...   " Jeena paused, glancing down at her hands again. "Tonight, I guess..  I was mourning my memories. 'Cause now, giving up..  it means they're really gone." Jeena's gaze dropped back to her hands and held there, as tears fell onto them. The long, clean scrape of metal against leather pulled her attention back to the leader of the Sabres as she pulled out a dark jade blade from a scabbard, holding it point down before aiming the pommel at her. Jeena blinked tears away before picking it up and making a few test swings.
It was...perfect.
Balanced to her strength, firm in her grip. It was less a weapon and more some sort of lethal extension of herself. The vibrant green of the
steel in the blade brought forth images of leaves and spring, and the darker green of the hilt accented it wonderfully.
"It's...beautiful."
"It's yours," Sylia said softly, getting a surprised look from the other woman. "You've held the name we all have for some time. You've proven yourself valiant and brave, a defender of the weak and the oppressed. You've triumphed over a dozen hardships of your own....your memories may not have returned. You may not remember who you were. But I can tell you who you are. You're one of my Sabres, a hero to the people of this city, and one of the strongest women I've ever met. That sword is merely a physical symbol of what's become true over these last months...and when you're ready, there's an armor that goes with it, waiting for you as well."
Sylia caught her eyes, and the sympathy in them was far beyond what Jeena had expected. "I know. It's hard letting go...you want to hold onto
it because it used to exist for you, you're sure of it. It feels like you're surrendering to some enemy you can't fight. Like something precious was stolen from you and you're just letting them get away."
She stood up, resting a hand on Jeena's arm.
"But you don't have to mourn your old memories. Eventually, we all grow old and they start to go fuzzy and drift away. But people are more than their memories. The way the experiences those memories came from shaped them....the people they became...that more than anything is the precious part of life...and that wasn't taken from you."
Sylia smiled gently.
"I was...waiting, I admit...to see where this went before I told you. You know like I do what I and my girls really are....that we aren't the people that existed by these names back in our dimension of origin...but I still have the memories of that Sylia Stingray, and I know she remembered one Jeena Malso, at least partially."
She nodded at Jeena's shocked expression. "You were a police officer. A member of the ADP, in fact...you were part of an organization who routinely faced down the most dangerous threats in Megatokyo, without a thought to your own safety, because you were protecting the people. Fighting things as dangerous as any villian in this city. You vanished at some point after that, before Nene joined the ADP herself....but that's what I remember of you...and as far as I can tell, memories or not, you've still lived up to who you used to be, even if you don't remember the experiences that shaped you."
She smiled once more, gently. "And that, to me, seems to be all that matters." Sylia bowed to Jeena, then turned back to the teleporter. "Use your new sword in good health, Jeena. And when you're ready, we'll be waiting." And in a crackling burst of light, Sylia disappeared, leaving Jeena Malso, nee Lost Sabre, considering the gleaming blade laid across her legs.

"We can both be safe together, and that's all that matters."

...

"How can you be so foolish? Shinji, I love you, but I don't have time to argue with you. These two are going to die, now or later, it doesn't
matter. -You- don't have to. That's all I'm offering you. Now come over here and stop being such an idiot."

...

Ichi frowned thoughtfully at the slowly spreading scarlet stain on the front of her smock, and then looked at Shinji. The corners of her mouth cocked upward
in a smile.

"Well, I will be God-damned," she said slowly and distinctly. "Shinji. You were actually -listening-. I'm... I'm proud of you."

Then her eyes rolled up in her head and she crumpled to the floor.

Ayanami Ichi arrived in Hell with a smile on her lips.

It didn't last long.

Hell was hot, and dark, and rather medieval-looking, at the moment. The particular spot she'd landed in seemed to be the stone-walled hallway of some
sort of castle.

The heat didn't bother her.

The dark didn't bother her.

No sign of modern conveniences, no visible light sources but I can see just fine - yay demonic vision - and tapestries on
the walls depicting - oh, gross. Okay, have to admit, even I can be disgusted by some things. Moving right along...

The decor was completely unacceptable.

She spent a totally unfulfilling period - she thought it was about four hours or so, but her watch wasn't working - exploring the twisting, branching
corridors of the 'castle'. The halls were lined with more tapestries, most of them depicting the worst excesses of the so-called 'seven deadly
sins' (Really, she thought, if Sloth were a sin, all humanity is damned anyway,
lazy buggers. The thought was, however, scant comfort to someone who didn't care any more about damning or saveing humanity than she did about
pretty much anything else.)

The sight of a tapestry that looked exactly like the first one she'd seen, but was on the floor, gave her a moment's pause. The footprints in the
dust on the wall next to her made things even clearer. 'The Egyptian Method' might work for keeping one's way in a normal labyrinth, but when the
designer could tell the laws of geometry and physics what to go do with themselves, well... Crap. Okay, that didn't
work... now what? Who do I have to kill to get out of here?

"Well," said a clear, tenor voice, distinctly feminine and coolly amused, "You could always kill yourself. I don't guarantee you'd enjoy where it would get you out of here to,
however."

--

Ichi grinned to herself as she examined the face in the mirror. The reflected image showed paler skin than she was used to, but the wicked mirth in the newly
crimson eyes was the same. Her hair was starting to show streaks of the vibrant powder-blue that Reilael had sported in her own mortal guise - fitting, given
Ichi's origins as a copy of the Cherub.

The deal had been hours in the making, and Ichi was still not sure exactly what her new patron's goal was. Depriving Natlateth of her supporters on this
side of the line was one thing, but the choice of her new placement was ... well, questionable. On the one hand, it would give her the opportunity she'd
craved: to make her own life, her own power, free of the soul-grip Natlateth had had over her. Just what exactly Lilith got out of sending her to school,
though... that was a question for later exploration. Very detailed exploration.

In the meantime, however, she'd spent a very enjoyable afternoon - and evening, night, and morning - completing
the negotiations. And today she was off to school for the first time in her life.

This required she at least pretend to wear the school uniform. Fortunately the regulations on that weren't all that specific, and she'd customized
things a good bit. The silk was hedonistically soft against the bare skin beneath it. The deep maroon shirt was unbuttoned a bit at the top, hinting at but not
really exposing any of her modest cleavage. A charcoal-grey blazer displayed the school's horned-skull logo, and matching slacks fell over the low-heeled
boots she'd selected. "Perfect," she declared. "Just enough to tease, tempt, and tantalize..."

--

An hour later, she stood in front of the class, grinning impishly to herself as she finally made the connection that gave her the start of Lilith's plan.

"I'd like you all to welcome our new transfer student," said the teacher, "Ichi Ayanami. Ichi, would you mind taking a seat next to Ysrafel?
I'm sure she won't mind sharing her textbook for today.

"And let's all give her a warm welcome to Dark Heart High."

Tales of the Infamous: Like Blood-red Snow

"Oyuri!" Grandmother Kozue called. "Oyuri!" She winced as a pang welled up in her old bones. Winter had struggled mightily against spring
this year, and remnants of the battle lingered in the shade of the woods near the edge of the fields her family worked. "Where is that girl?" They only had a month to prepare the fields for the year's rice crop, and they would need every hand that
could be spared for the task.

Sometimes Grandmother despaired of Oyuri ever amounting to anything. The empty-headed little thing had the fool notion in her head of being some daimyo's
wife, despite her fondness for the wild places at the edge of the Forest of Bloody Snow. Kozue's own grandmother had told her the tale of a great fight
among the cherry trees between two daimyo's armies which had so soaked the ground of the forest with blood that the blossoms would forever more be red. It
must be true, the trees that marked the border between farmland and the Forest were beginnig to bloom, and the blooms were red like they had been as long as
Kozue remembered.

A thread of worry began to gnaw at Grandmother Kozue. Had Oyuri gone farther into the woods than the shrine to O-Inari? There were rumors of Tanuki, Kappa, and
a two-tailed fox had even been spotted by one of the woodcutters over the winter. She returned to her cooking fire, to make sure that today's meal had not
burned, when she heard a tired "Tadaima" on the genkan.

"Oyuri!" Kozue scolded, while enfolding the dear child in her arms. "I was so worried when you didn't come right away. Are you all
right?"

Oyuri hesitantly returned the hug. "This one is fine, Grandmother. In fact, this one is better than she has ever been."

Kozue smiled slightly. "Well, dear child, where did you learn to talk like a courtier? You might catch yourself a lordling yet!"

"This one met a Lady near O-Inari-sama's shrine, and she talked like this," Oyuri said, her eyes closed in a playful smile. "She taught me
how while we viewed the cherry blossoms."

Kozue was so glad to see her granddaughter was all right, she never noticed when the sun came out from behind some clouds. She also never noticed the fox ears
and tails added to Oyuri's shadow.
