  Princess Principal
Posted by: ECSNorway - 08-31-2017, 12:47 PM - Forum: General Chatter - No Replies

Anyone been watching this one?

The setting is Victorian-era Britain, with a Steampunk desktop theme.

The discovery of Cavorite (gravity-control phlebotinum) lead to the creation of an Aerial Navy, which in turn has somehow lead to a popular uprising against the Crown that managed to fail/succeed in the worst possible way. The country is now divided in half, between Royalists and Populists, complete with a Cold War Berlin style wall splitting London in two.

Into this we place the obligatory team of schoolgirls, which includes the aforementioned Princess, a second girl who is her apparent perfect double, a not-really-school-age Femme Fatale, a steampunk cyborg, and a ninja. (Apparently Japan is taking sides, or at least their Ambassador is...)

And they're spies. Who get up to all sorts of James Bond style caper-adventures of the sort you'd expect in Cold War Berlin, British Style. While maintaining their cover at their base of operations, a Properly Posh Young Ladies' Academy.
And of course each of them has her own secrets and her own agenda, and gets some nice character moments to explore them. And hopefully these will have interesting repercussions down the line.

Normally one would expect a story like this to go one of two ways -- cutesy moe and fanservice, or grimdark and twisted in ways that would make Gendo Ikari proud. Fortunately so far, Princess Principal treads a confident middle path between them, acknowledging the dark side of realistic espionage work while maintaining the cheerful optimism audiences have come to expect of schoolgirl-hijinx series.

WARNING: What's Going To Happen Tonight
Posted by: Bob Schroeck - 08-31-2017, 07:19 AM - Forum: Forums - Replies (1)

This is a warning ahead of time:  When I get home from work tonight, I'm going to reset the posts and threads tables completely, and clear out the last post info from the forums table, and start the whole thing over from scratch.  Hopefully I'll be able to get most of what I had in place yesterday morning back up by Friday night.

I'll repeat this:  All threads and posts will be deleted tonight to prepare for reloading transferred material.  That includes this thread and any posts anyone makes between now and then.  Thanks to my typoing a SQL statement we've lost all the new content on the board already, save for this thread and the one reporting the problem anyway.  I'm going to start with a clean slate.

  Finishing Chapter Two
Posted by: Bob Schroeck - 08-28-2017, 08:40 PM - Forum: Drunkard's Walk S: Heart of Steel - Replies (9)

(If you don't want to see a random complaint about the writing process, feel free to close this thread now.)

The fight at the end of chapter two -- the one with Jadeite at the radio station at the end of episode three -- is driving me nuts.  I've written or started to write three different versions of it now, and none of them worked.  I wish I could figure out what it was that my subconscious wants out of this scene, because I'd gladly provide it.  At this point it's entirely possible that I want this chapter to be done far more than any of you do.

Hey, Bob, want to do a really big version of IST on spec?
Posted by: robkelk - 08-27-2017, 05:09 PM - Forum: Bob's Game Writing - Replies (2)

Probably not, but on the off-chance that that sounds interesting:

Steve Jackson Games currently has the Dungeon Fantasy box set at the printer. Phil Reed (CEO of SJGames) has said in post 12 of this thread:

Quote:If all of the copies sell out before the end of the year, well, let me just be the first to say that I'll do all I can to push a sci-fi boxed set onto our schedule and make it happen.
The thread goes on to discuss other possible Powered-by-GURPS box sets, including supers. Nothing official, mind you.

Who knows the old musicals well?
Posted by: robkelk - 08-26-2017, 08:59 PM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (2)

I'm identifying the inspirations for various free resources, so that I can mark various freebies as "cosplay" items on the freebie wiki. I've come to the poses for the 3D Universe Toon Frog, which has two that I'm pretty sure need the cosplay tag.

This one is pretty obviously out of One Froggy Evening... right?

The other one, though... is it or isn't it? There's a particular movie that's nagging at the back of my head that both poses in this pack could be inspired by, but I'm not 100% sure so I'm not going to say which movie... What's this from?--

You have to be kidding me. After Charlottesville  , it's evident on whose side Trump is on. The racist and the bigots. His staff knows the outcry this is going to happen. Did it on a Friday night as well. Kinda tells me they know what sort of reaction this is going to take form.__________________
