  [Draft] Wonderland Farm
Posted by: robkelk - 10-17-2008, 12:44 AM - Forum: Fenspace - Replies (33)

(Before I forget about this again... I've mentioned a few times that Noah's waiting on Rockhounds to deliver a mined-out asteroid to Stellvia. Also, Fenian was wondering what Noah was going to do with two of the Jason's rosebushes. One bush is going into Noah's office, but the other... Well, read for yourselves, and please point out any obvious gaffes.)

====== Wonderland ======

Formerly known as [[gazetteer:companies:Rockhounds]' Space Rock #11, **Wonderland** is the single largest post-[[gazetteer:government:great_justice|OGJ] source of produce for station //[[ships:Stellvia]//.

===== History =====

"Earth is the only place you can get vegetables." - Alice (Arisa) Glennorth, //Uchuu no Stellvia//

As much as Noah Scott likes that particular anime, this one line from it always bothered him. Why not grow vegetables in space? He quickly found out how impractical it was to grow more than a token amount of food crops in the disused nooks and crannies on his station, but he never completely abandoned the idea.

Finally, in October 2013, [[gazetteer:companiesConfusedtellvia_corporation#stellvia_trading|Stellvia Trading] took possession of Rockhounds' Space Rock #11. It was fully mined-out, with a maze of twisty little passages (all alike) throughout its body - ideal for widening and turning into huge caverns. His staff have enlarged the various chambers to the point that there are over two hundred acres of land available for cultivation, and handwaved the chambers so that they'd have earth-normal gravity and day-night cycles. Stellvia Trading also purchased topsoil from 'Daneside developers who were turning farmland into suburbs, and used it to turn the asteroid's barren rock into farmland.

In recognition of needing to go down "rabbit holes" to get to the farms and in honour of Alice, Noah re-named the asteroid //Wonderland// when he officially opened it on January 1, 2013.

===== What's Down the Rabbit-Hole? =====

Wonderland's largest chambers are usually devoted to grasses and similar plants; wheat, barley, quinoa, amaranth, rye, and maize are all in the collection to a greater or lesser degree. Smaller chambers hold beans, berries, edible flowers, and other vegetables - especially potatoes, tomatoes, cocoa beans, sugar beets, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and roses. (Although the large chambers sometimes grow beans and the smaller ones sometimes grow grasses; Mr. Freedman knows the importance of crop rotation.) And there's clover and beehives in all the farm chambers.

The smallest chambers are for long-term seed storage, short-term harvested food storage, dedicated agricultural experiments, compost and related storage (Wonderland takes most of //Stellvia//'s organic wastes for fertilizer), and residences.

Chambers with handwaved crops are carefully isolated, with independant life-support systems and no internal access to the rest of Wonderland. One of those carefully-isolated chambers holds a single Soul of the Earth rose bush, one beehive, and a selection of clover, grasses, and ornamental roses. Noah is running an experiment to determine whether, and how quickly, handwavium spreads through pollination from 'waved plants to unwaved plants.

Wonderland's chief agronomist, Jerry Freedman, doesn't believe in using GMOs; he can't bank their seeds and use them the next growing cycle, and the controlled climates of Wonderland don't have any unwanted pests. Some of the staff suggested using "heirloom" breeds of vegetables and berries for their subtly different flavours, so there are a variety of breeds for many of the local plants in the asteroid's seed banks.

The farm does its best to not compete directly with //[[ships:Babylon .5];// since that station is known for growing tropical fruits, Wonderland mostly stays out of that business.

===== Noteworthy Inhabitants =====

**Micheline Rouleau** is Wonderland's chief administrator. Hired away from Air France, she spends her time directing traffic and pushing paper, rarely even visiting the farms.

**Jerry Freedman** is the asteroid's chief agronomist. An old Kentucky boy who was happy to move to space permanently, he puts his agriculture degree to good use, ensuring Wonderland's ecosystems don't go off-kilter.

**Lea Meadows** is Wonderland's chief apiarist. This ex-pat Canadian from southern Ontario keeps the bees happy, and the honey and beeswax supply flowing from Wonderland to //Stellvia.// She's obviously biomodded, with short antenna that pick up subtle changes in wind direction and air pressure (and make it impossible for her to wear a mass-produced spacesuit).

**Sergy Gudanov** is the facility's doctor. He makes his services available to the other L5 habitats when he isn't needed on Wonderland. Born and raised in Moscow, Dr. Gudanov didn't realize the folly of putting a half-acre (the entirety of one of the isolated chambers) of [[gazetteer:handwavium:handwavium_and_medical_technology|Blood Oranges] under cultivation; he's now happy to give them away, making Wonderland the largest supplier of Blood Oranges outside of the Jason himself after Operation Great Justice.

  Jelidan - Kat/SR Scrapper: A write-up/Request
Posted by: Shader - 10-16-2008, 02:18 PM - Forum: Build Advice - Replies (16)

With the coming of i13, and dual builds, I thought I'd make my lvl 50 into a PvE/PvP toon. One build the concept build, the other for the PvP zones and the arena. As some of you may or may not know, my main lvl 50 toon is a Kat/SR scrapper. Goes by the name of Jelidan, and been seen to interact with some of the Legendary on occassion.
Concept wise, as it stands now, she is a sword fighter... a very fast moving sword fighter - with a 'spirit in the blade' type sword. What good is a sword fighter that can't get out the way of her own blade? She is use to moving faster then normal and dodging attacks, but the skills are actually from the blade itself. She sees the world slightly differently then others, due to the whispering of the blade, and vast amounts of knowledge, but that is merely dependent on when and if her blade chooses to tell her about something that is knows. (Like it knows that there is something weird about Wy'tin when they first crossed paths, but only told Jelidan to be careful) Yes, Jelidan can see Alistair, on occasion, again due to the blade's influence. Jelidan also has the innate ability to be moving so fast standing still to partly phase out of sync with this dimension and appear transparent. Yes, her name is a corruption of Jedi, she's grown much, much more from her original concept.
Budget constraints: well currently I only have 60 mil, but for all intents and purposes there are none. This build as literally cost me over 100 mil. Price is no object. I'll get the money eventually, and know how to work the market.
Now that I've yabbered on, onto the actual build itself.
When I did this, my original plan for Jelidan, I was under the impression that as you exemplared down, you lost the set bonuses from IOs, even if you had access to the IOs. For example if you 6 slotted Brawl and put a full set of lvl 40 Touch of Death in it, I though you would loose the bonuses if you exemplared below level 40. I would really, really like proof that this is not the case, that the level of the IO set does not matter for the Set bonuses to be applied.
Anyway, Terrance says this isn't the case. So one his word it looks like I'm wrong.
With all of the above in mind, here is the build that got me to lvl 50 without a respec. (ok so I switched to generics IOs when IOs came along, and then to sets, but no respec has been used)

At Level 50, when I have all the toggles running, Jelidan has 43.8% Melee, 45% Ranged, 45.6% AoE. Note that I do NOT have the health uniques atm, and I was about to bid for the +Stealth. This Defense puts Jelidan around the soft cap of 45% for positional defenses.
There are only two problems.
Late bloomer. She doesn't get to this point until after lvl 40.
End usage. She chews End like its going out of fashion. Particularly when she runs all the toggles and gets in full swing. Then you add Focused Accuracy into the mix. The result? LoLStamina.
So... you have any tweaks to her PvE build?
Notice that I don't have Divine Avalanche... I didn't need it.
How much of a tweak do you have? Open slather. Rebuild Mah Toon!
That's not to say I haven't had a bash at it myself...

This is a build that gives 52.8%/44%/49.6% positional defense. Its a Tough/Weave build. This is what I mean by rebuild. Get out the chainsaw! [Image: banana-dance.gif] It does have the bonus hasten or there abouts.
Terrance did snort that I couldn't get anything out of purples. Whelp... the above build has a purple in Kick, and it costs me 3.75% in Range and dropped me below the 45% mark. Change Kick to 6 slot Mako and you get a extra 3.75% range def.
Terrance there you go, give me good def, with purples.
For giggles, I tried to make a leaping Divine Avalanche build... and probably mucked it up, as it only got 45.7%/43.2%/42.5% .... and swapping out the two big melee attacks for 5 x Purples 9 + Change for Recharge only made the defense figure horrid. (43.8/39.4/40.6)

  For Ankhani: Ari Costume Designs
Posted by: Acyl - 10-16-2008, 10:14 AM - Forum: The Legendary - Replies (6)

Ankhani:-

Well, as I promised, here's some ideas for possible costume designs for Aritisa. At least that's how I think you spell her name.
I'm not actually sure.

If I understand correctly, she only has, what, one costume design currently? \o_O/ This must be rectified! Okay, I wish also my brain were
more in gear, but, this is just random rumination. Pictures thumbnailed and linked for size, yo.

Legacy Chain-inspired Mage

[Image: th_ari1.jpg]

Alright. I'm REALLY not sure about the colour scheme here, but this is a combination of elements I've been toying with. You can use
the Jewel and Ring chest details on a robe, y'see. I don't see that being done very often. With the right shoulder pads, you totally get a sort of
Legacy Chain effect, yeah? You could probably also put a Full Mantle cape on this to increase the stuff on the upper torso. Again, colour probably highly
variable here, I don't actually like the black and gold that much...but I figured something metallic is a good idea.

Another concept here is making the trim of the main robe body the same colour as the primary, so it looks less overtly Asian in appearance,
yeah? More seamless and one-piece. The last conceit is using a pencil skirt with the dagger pattern for the bottoms, which further extends the robe
look.

Figure this isn't a bad way to do a 'mage' sorta outfit.

Techno Fury

[Image: th_ari2.jpg]

I've been kinda fascinated with how the camo stripe pattern melds with the swirl chest detail, and how THAT all goes pretty well with
cyborg gloves. I don't see camo stripe and swirl chest detail used very often, also.

The face piece here is a cyborg 2 detail with elf ears coloured gold - that also creates a rather different look, I think, seems like
it's one continuous piece of gold metal from a distance.

Black and White Assassin

[Image: th_ari3.jpg]

This one a few of you might recognise. I've been messing with this black/white jacket look for some time now. This costume is an obvious
cousin of Battery Acid's disco look, and to a lesser degree Space Mage's party dress, but developed in a totally different direction.

I really like this version. I like the idea of using the Desire pattern under the vest to...totally change how the vest jacket looks, really. High heeled boots
also complete it. The belt is sorta variable. The costume works with a black heavy studded with white studs, or a black heavy leather (the buckles and such
come out white anyway). This is the jewel version, which gives some colour to the costume and adds a focal point. Whether that's good or bad sorta depends;
I think the jewel version would work better if there's also a red eyeglow aura of some kind for visual symmetry. That said, the idea of having uncovered
and piercing eyes over the half-face mask is pretty compelling also.

...

Ari is Ankhani's Elec/Elec Brute, her concept is...I dunno, she's some kind of demon or demigoddess or nether plane thingamijig bound to a physical
vessel in a Thorns ritual gone wrong or somesuch. I think she wanted to evoke the whole Fury feel, if I remember correctly. I'm sure Ankh can elaborate on
it more.

  Presidential Tells

I cannot decide whether or not it would be a bad thing (ignoring all other considerations) to have a President of the United States who visibly sticks out his tongue whenever he lies.

I mean, sure, we'd know when he was telling us a whopper. But so would other nations...

  [Draft/RFC] The Myths of Fenspace
Posted by: Bob Schroeck - 10-15-2008, 06:51 PM - Forum: Fenspace - Replies (37)

Here's a little something that occurred to me this morning. It's incomplete, partly because I'd like to see what ideas it spurs in the
collective. Let me know what you all think. Warning: mildly preformatted for the wiki.

======Myths of Fenspace======

Although as a civilization Fenspace is, on the normal scale of

things, barely past the sperm-sighting-egg stage, it tends to

move and develop a bit faster than its ground-bound counterparts.

One good example of this would be the body of myth and folklore

that has seemingly exploded into existence starting almost as

soon as the first few fencraft made it off Earth.

Whether any of the following are ''real'' is open to speculation.

But the folklorists who have made it into fenspace or who have

taken up the field of study after arriving here take pains to

remind us that there is almost always a seed of truth at the

center of every myth. And when something as borderline magical as

handwavium is concerned, that seed of truth may well be the size

of a coconut. As the Wizards and Technomages have so clearly

demonstrated time and again, Clarke's Third Law may as well be a

natural Law in Fenspace, and makes it all but impossible to

dismiss any of the tales below as anything more than "unlikely".

However, it does go without saying that no conclusive evidence

of the existence of any of the following has hit the Interwave,

and until it does, they will remain nothing more than fanciful

stories.

===== Berserkers =====

Named for the monstrous robotic planet-killers from the work of

Fred Saberhagen, their Fenspace equivalents are reputedly much

smaller but no less coldblooded and destructive. The least

reliable accounts tell of immense craft that could threaten a

midsized asteroid or the ''Grover's Corner's'', but most who

claim to have seen a berserker describe something substantially

smaller, barely large enough to devour a 'waved 18-wheeler.

There is also, predictably, some disagreement on their number,

with quantities ranging from one to hundreds claimed.

Those who lend credence to reports of berserkers speculate that

they are Boskonian doomsday weapon(s) and worry that they may be

Von Neumann machines, out of their creators' control, or both.

Predictably, Trekkies who believe that berserkers exist call them

"Doomsday Machines".

===== Carmen Miranda's Ghost =====

(Obligatory filk ref)

===== Ghost Ships =====

(A couple flying dutchmen here, complete with ghost crews.

Victims of phasing/cloaking tech gone wrong, or true ghosts?

Mostly began appearing during and after OGJ.)

===== The Good Samaritans =====

(Ghosts of dead astronauts who roam the spaceways helping

those in need. May be the same as the Oxygen Fairy (below).)

===== The Great Bird of the Galaxy/The Great Maker =====

The notional deity of Fenspace, one step above the Overfan.

Not so much worshipped as sworn by (or at), it probably doesn't

actually count as a true myth as an extended cultural running

gag.

===== The Oxygen Fairy =====

Mysterious benefactor of stranded and damaged fencraft, who

extends their faltering life support long enough for them to

be rescued. Originally a tongue-in-cheek supposition, but

after several spectacular rescues, some S&R teams swear it

exists.

===== The Phoenix =====

(Ship + pilot who merged into single being during an uncontrolled

re-entry. Believed to be a carryover from the Julia Ecklar folk

song, but numerous witnesses have claimed to have encountered the

Phoenix. Others point to Wave Convoy to indicate that it's at

least ''possible.'')

  Obama Campaign Charged with Credit Fraud
Posted by: ECSNorway - 10-15-2008, 06:09 PM - Forum: Politics and Other Fun - Replies (13)

Quote:NORTH KANSAS CITY, MO.

 --

A North Kansas City couple has been left scratching their heads after they became the victims of a political scam.
Steve
and Rachel Larman say a strange credit card charge appeared on their
statement this month -- a $2300 donation to Barack Obama's presidential
campaign. The Larman's say they don't want this to be about their
political affiliation, but they say they're not about to give the Obama
campaign any help from their pocketbook.
They said they notified Chase, their credit card bank, to report the fraud.
"(They)
said that they had seen-they were familiar with this," said Steve
Larman. "It was fraud, they believe through telemarketing but they were
going to be doing some more investigations."
The Larman's don't
want their politics to enter into what is essentially just a fraudulent
charge. But they say that the charge involves the Obama campaign adds
insult to injury for the registered Republicans.
"They (Chase)
kept on asking me 'are you sure you wouldn't have gone to a site in
support of Obama'," said Rachel Larman. "And I repeatedly said 'Im
voting for McCain - I would not be going to an Obama site'."
Chase
dropped the charge from the Larman's card. The couple is thankful that
they caught the charge on the card, but worried that others may not see
that type of fraud on their own credit cards before it's too late.
"You
always get emails saying be on the lookout," said Rachel. "So I just
wanted to get the word out, that there's someone out there perpetrating
this against people, and to pay attention."
The Obama campaign said they were aware of the Larman's story, but did not have any comment.
