Go Nagai's two famous characters and Doug.
Posted by: Disruptor - 05-22-2007, 03:20 AM - Forum: Future Steps - Replies (6)

I'm quite sure that Doug could get along with Honey Kisarigi(any of them), even though she tends to make smart-aleck comments during a fight. The fact that she has a Demon Lord(Panther Zora) coming after her would also add to it. Although that is not for Cutey Honey Flash or Re: Cutey Honey, just for the manga, original anime, and OVA versions.
The reason given in the manga was that Honey's soul is free of all evil(no original sin) and Zora wanted her because of it. No, I don't but it either. Especially since there WAS a person in another Go Nagai work who truly had an unblemished soul until he perforemd an insane ritual to save the world. Which brings us to him.
Now then, the one that would have Doug ripping out his hair in fustration. Heck even Paradox/Godboy would have headaches with this guy. Akira Fudo. Akira placed his eternal soul at risk during a Black Sabbath ritual and reversed the possion to take control of the Demon Lord Amon. Lord Xenon seems to have two morivations for targeting Akira. One is to kill him, for taking Amon down like that and th other is that Xenon wants to seduce Akira becuase he is who he is.(sort of like Tabris dealing with Shinji in Evangelion)
Is Devilman a Celestial or something else? In the Blackjack manga, alll the various Blackjacks merged into one person(Devilman) and then he proceeded to trash Hell
By the way Chris, how would Pardox deal with Devilman? The Holy and Infernal forces must have sat up and took note of that little stunt. It doesn't help that Ryo Asuka, did a falied stunt and merged with Satan himself. Akira is in control of Amon, or the two have merged perfectly. Ryo was slowly took over by Satan and Akira killed him. --------------------

I just got on a Dresden Files kick and read all 8 books (I'm looking forward to getting book 9 in something other than hardcover) and I have to wonder.... How would Doug fare in Dresden's Chicago? (and how would Doug's helmet survive Harry?)

Anime Primer - call for submissions
Posted by: robkelk - 05-21-2007, 11:09 PM - Forum: General Chatter - No Replies

I just added a review to the Anime Primer, which reminded me that my irregular request for new Primer writeups now has its own webpage.
This is a chance to try some ultra-tight writing - if there's an anime you like that isn't in the Primer, and you can write a short description of it (preferably 250 words, but that's not set in stone) that doesn't include spoilers, feel free to send it in! Either e-mail it to me at the address in the Primer, or post it here. I include attribution for all writeups.
No, I'm not doing this because I'm lazy. (Well, that's not the major reason. ) There are only so many hours in the day, and I do need to earn my pay, so I can't possibly watch all the anime that's out there. Getting volunteers to provide writeups increases the number of eyes watching the new (and older) shows...
("What's the new review?" This one, that really should have been added a few years ago. Obviously, there's no time limit for new writeups.)
(Edit: Helps if I provide the right link...)

Looking for a pure data site
Posted by: Fidoohki - 05-21-2007, 10:30 PM - Forum: Politics and Other Fun - Replies (3)

Ok I found this site called 'just facts'
justfacts.com/index.asp
it seems interesting but all its info is dated. Anyone know of a similiar but up to date site? Perferably without a far right or
far left slant?
Thanks in advance

  [meta] In Praise of Fanfic
Posted by: M Fnord - 05-21-2007, 08:13 PM - Forum: Other People's Fanfiction - Replies (1)

Cory Doctrow sings the praises of the humble fanficcer:

Quote:
Walk the streets of Florence and you'll find a copy of the David on practically every corner. For centuries, the way to become a Florentine sculptor has been to copy Michelangelo, to learn from the master. Not just the great Florentine sculptors, either great or terrible, they all start with the master; it can be the start of a lifelong passion, or a mere fling. The copy can be art, or it can be crap the best way to find out which kind you've got inside you is to try.
Science fiction has the incredible good fortune to have attracted huge, social groups of fan-fiction writers. Many pros got their start with fanfic (and many of them still work at it in secret), and many fan-fic writers are happy to scratch their itch by working only with others' universes, for the sheer joy of it. Some fanfic is great there's plenty of Buffy fanfic that trumps the official, licensed tie-in novels and some is purely dreadful.
Two things are sure about all fanfic, though: first, that people who write and read fanfic are already avid readers of writers whose work they're paying homage to; and second, that the people who write and read fanfic derive fantastic satisfaction from their labors. This is great news for writers.

  Eve online backstory
Posted by: VladimirTherin - 05-21-2007, 08:41 AM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (1)

Eve Online explains the game-mechanic of player-death not being permanent by saying the right before their ejection pod is breached, it transmits their mind-print to the nearest cloning facility.
They have developed a lot of background-fiction to support this, heres an example:
www.eve-online.com/backgr...-07-05.asp
It is really surprising how some people get squicked at the notion that every time their ship blows up, thousands of imaginary people died permanently, while they get to wake up in a new body.

  Old fic recomendations
Posted by: CattyNebulart - 05-21-2007, 03:11 AM - Forum: Other People's Fanfiction - No Replies

We often recomed new fics to each other but what about fics that where written years ago. We should have a recomendation thread for them too.
I'll begin with www.angelfire.com/sd/dark...index.html
which contains several fics worth reading even if the color choice of the site is terrible.
The only one on that site that I wouldn't recomend is Quantum Destenies, which is too long, and not that great.
The Snow Raven is the only one of those I haven't read more than once and it's on my current reading list, and what I have read so far warants a reomendation.
Doe sanyone know what happened to KaosQu? I'm still waiting on chapter 6 of Sound Hearts, and his email is dead.
E: "Did they... did they just endorse the combination of the JSDF and US Army by showing them as two lesbian lolicons moving in together and holding hands and talking about how 'intimate' they were?"
B: "Have you forgotten so soon? They're phasing out Don't Ask, Don't Tell."
